Fatigue testing

A material works under fatigue when it supports loads that vary cyclically with time.

The purpose of fatigue testing is to analyze the strength characteristics of materials when working under variable loads. Among the fundamental parameters that qualify the characteristic fatigue behavior of materials are:

– The kinetics of the load applied over time.

– Type of stresses generated in the part, as a consequence of the application of the load.

– Type of work characteristic of the part as a whole in the machinery.

The type of work, type of stresses and kinetics of the load determine a great variety of fatigue tests.

Fatigue tests can be both of finished parts, such as car shock absorbers or other types, which are intended to see their service life.

On the other hand, fatigue tests can also be, very commonly, on asphalts, where the aim is to see the deterioration of the asphalt, or bituminous mix, over time and to see the progressive degradation.

For these tests there are specific tools, such as 3- and 4-point bending tools, indirect traction tools (Brazilian test), indirect traction fatigue, or the UGR FACT, designed by the University of Granada.

Some of the standards that apply to this world are the UNE EN 12697-24-2012 in various annexes, and UNE EN 12697-26-2012 in various annexes.
